Why is H. Potter so special to all these people?

Honestly- he's just another character; just another book. So why has it sold so many more copies than the greater books out there? Why THIS guy, who walks around under an 'invisibility cape' with his 'magic wand?' So here's my question: Why is H. Potter so special to all these people?
